In the weightlifting & bodybuilding world, the “pump” is a term often thrown around, and you will hear people saying that they are “chasing the pump”. This refers to the temporary increase of blood flow into the muscle group being worked, resulting in the muscle appearing larger than normal. This state can be best achieved through intensive, and in particular volume-based, training, however, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the most optimal way to increase muscle mass.

This boom in popularity can also be traced to the abundance of aesthetic bodybuilding figures being plastered all over social media, resulting in a large portion of the gym community experiencing forms of body dysmorphia. The gym is an intimidating place, and an oversized pump cover can be viewed as a means of hiding lacking muscle groups until a pump has been achieved, and the muscle group therefore seems larger than usual.
